International Day of the Girl Child is 11 October

Plan Ireland is pleased to announce that the United Nations has made the decision to officially recognise October 11th as the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’.

In order to highlight the unique challenges and issues facing girls in many developing countries, Plan has led the call for this world day as part of its ‘Because I Am A Girl’ campaign. An International Day of the Girl will now focus the world's attention on the importance of girls' rights. It will ensure that girls get the investment and recognition they deserve as citizens and as powerful agents of change within their own families, communities and nations.

On a European level, influential MEPs have supported the Declaration. Here in Ireland, we have mobilised key Ministers in the Dáil as well as Irish MEPs to support the Resolution. T

New EC website: 'Kids' Corner'

The European Commission has launched a special website – 'Kids' Corner' – for children and young people. http://europa.eu/kids-corner/

The website includes information about children's rights – e.g. EU rights for teenage workers, what are the EU emergency numbers if you are a child in danger - as well as games, quizzes and information about the EU and its Member States. It was first announced in the EU's Agenda for the Rights of the Child (IP/11/156).

The Kids' Corner is specifically written in a style children can understand. Children can easily learn important facts and figures about the EU, its history and its countries through games and quizzes in 22 EU languages.

While Europe and its future are much discussed in the media today, it is not always easy to understand why, and how, certain decisions are made. Decisions taken on a European level have a direct influence on the daily lives of all Europeans – young and old. So it is important for young people to understand what the EU is and how it functions.

The Commission therefore decided in its Agenda for the Rights of the Child to create a single entry point for children on the Europa website. The Kids' Corner offers: a 'games and quizzes' section where children can learn more about Europe in a fun way; a facts and figures section to explain what the EU is all about; a section about children's rights which contains games, videos and information designed for two separate age groups. Children and teenagers can learn about their rights, for example, the right to be heard and to receive information, and, as a result, take an active part in shaping their own future.

The Kids' Corner also links up and integrates the existing website 'Teachers' Corner', which contains material so that teachers can explain how the EU was founded and how it functions. National Disability Authority to launch findings of A National Survey of Public Attitudes to Disability 2011, 19 January

The report on National Survey of Public Attitudes to Disability will be launched by Kathleen Lynch, T.D. Minister of State with special responsibility for Disability, Older People, Equality & Mental Health at the beginning of the NDA seminar on the World Report on Disability (WHO 2011) on Thursday 19 January 2012 at 9am.

The findings of our 2011 National Survey of Public Attitudes to Disability has found a hardening of attitudes to people with disabilities in Ireland, since our previous surveys conducted in 2001 and 2006, This negative trend is found across all settings and all types of disability and covers a range of topics including knowledge of disability and attitudes to disability within the workplace, schools and in the neighbourhood. This year we sought to better understand the views behind respondent attitudes through the inclusion of in-depth probing questions which have provided helpful new insights.

When? Thursday 19 January 2012, 9am

Where? National Disability Authority, 25 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Beyond 2015 - Where next for the Millennium Development Goals?, 1 February 2012

Beyond 2015 - Where next for the Millennium Development Goals?: 1 February, Guinness Storehouse, Dublin. Organised by Trocaire. We have just four years to go until the MDGs expire in 2015. In the current political and economic climate, we cannot take for granted that there will be any overarching framework for global development after 2015 unless we work together to shape what it should be and ensure this time around we effectively address the causes of poverty and adopt a human rights based approach to development. Considering, it took ten years to develop and negotiate the original MDG framework, time is running out. Trócaire is organising a half-day panel discussion with opening address from Minister for Trade and Development, Jan OSullivan. For more information, and to RSVP please contact: scullen@trocaire.ie.
