Full programme for Abära International Disability Film Festival 20 - 23 October Dublin/Galway

The partners of the Abära International Disability Film Festival invite you to the Irish Premiere Gala Screening of “Music by Prudence”. The 2010 Academy Award® winning Music by Prudence tells a story of one young woman’s struggle who overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds, and in her own voice conveys to the world that ‘disability does not mean inability’. There will be a post-screening discussion between Prudence Mabhena and Sinead Crowley of RTÉ.

Thursday 20th October 2011 at 6.30pm, Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. RSVP by Friday 14th October to info@adiarts.ie.

Followed by drinks reception.

Abära - Ireland’s first ever International Disability Film Festival kicks off this October with a selection of stunning films from around the world. Aimed at celebrating the progress made by people with disabilities while increasing awareness and understanding of the many  challenges still faced by people with disabilities across the globe, Abära opens on Thursday, October 20th and continues until Sunday, October 23rd.

One of the most anticipated films of the festival is UK director Lucy Walker's remarkable Academy Award short-listed documentary, 'Blindsight'. The film, which will be shown in axis: Ballymun, follows the emotional journey of six blind Tibetan teenagers who climb the north face of Mount Everest with their hero, blind American mountaineer, Erik Weihenmayer, and their teacher, Sabriye Tenberken, the founder of Tibet’s only school for blind children.

Abära is also delighted to present the compelling new documentary from Dutch filmmaker, Marjin Poels, ‘The Voice of 650 Million Times One’, which features disabled people across Africa and Asia talking openly about their exclusion from society in everyday matters such as healthcare, reproductive health and their vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.   Malcolm Quigley, VSO Ireland and James O’Connor of Open Heart House are partaking in a post screening discussion.

Other highlights of the festival include 'Happy Birthday Thalidomide' which will be followed by a post screening discussion between actor/comedian Mat Fraser in conversation with Finola Cassidy of the Irish Thalidomide Association. The Senegalese short ‘The Little Girl who Sold The Sun’ and a screening of the feature ‘Black Sun’ which will be introduced by talented Irish producer, director Hilary Fennell among many others.

The past number of years have seen significant changes in Ireland, we have moved from a country of outward migration to a country with considerable inward migration.  Consequently, Ireland is now a more culturally diverse society than ever before in our past.  In response to these changes in Irish society, the Irish Red Cross developed a diversity and non-discrimination programme in 2009.  A key element of this programme is the Positive Images project which is currently being rolled out through the youth network.

Positive Images is an exciting European project led by the British Red Cross and co-financed by the European Commission.  The aim of the Positive Images Project is that awareness is improved, positive attitudes and support developed, and capacity built through raising awareness of development and migration issues amongst young people (12-25), decision makers, influential stakeholders and development education actors across Europe.

‘What is Quality in Development Education?’ seminar, 17 October

As the need to capture the impact of our work becomes more urgent, Development Education practitioners are becoming more interested in the relationship between the slippery notions of quality and impact.  Does high quality work lead to deeper impact in society? A seminar will take place to further this discussion hosted jointly by IDEA, Dochas, Development Perspectives, SUAS, Comhlamh, The Africa Centre and the Centre for Global Education.

This event will continue our collective investigations by asking; Do Development Education practitioners need to adhere to key principles or cornerstones to achieve high quality work? If so, what are they?  Would a quality framework be helpful for guiding our work? What dimensions of our work should a quality framework address?

This seminar will also follow-up from the recent DEEEP Summer School in June 2011 in Finland. Feedback will be provided on the Summer School, and the rest of the seminar will be dedicated to applying learning and furthering disucssion in an Irish context.

To register for this event, please e-mail Joanne Malone – joanne@suas.ie. It takes place on Monday the 17th of October (10.00 – 4.00pm) in the Dublin Writers Museum, Parnell Square, Dublin.

We want to share your successes and your initiatives. We need your articles and to hear about what fun things you are doing.
